Downtown Kennesaw Restaurants and Events to Watch This August

Two years ago, if you wanted a new restaurant in Kennesaw, you drove to Barrett Parkway. In 2026, the map flipped. The chains still land near Town Center, but the more interesting openings, the ones with an owner's name attached, are landing on Main Street and Cherokee Street inside the historic core. If you already live here, that shift is worth understanding, because it changes where your Friday night probably ends up.

Below is a working guide for August through October: what's open in Downtown Kennesaw right now, what's under construction, and which weekends deserve a spot on the calendar.

The Main Street shift

The clearest sign of the change is the former Nest space at 2921 Cherokee St NW. Smash Hit Burgers, the food-truck-born brand from Zac and Myah Patterson, opened its brick-and-mortar there after targeting a February 1, 2026 opening, with the restaurant spanning two buildings and a shared center patio featuring a retractable roof, heaters for cool nights and fans for warm days. A dedicated food truck pad sits at the front of the property. The layout tells you what the owners actually think Downtown Kennesaw wants: a walkable patio anchor with the mobile roots still visible from the street.

A few blocks north, another food-truck-to-storefront story quietly wrapped. Joupe Jeht opened its first permanent location in Kennesaw, in the Jiles Plaza Shopping Center at 3055 N Main St, alongside MRR's Deli and Tacos Del Chavo, with a grand opening on May 30. The family-run concept brings Cambodian street food flavor to Kennesaw, growing out of a busy lineup of farmers markets and pop ups in the area, with grilled beef and chicken sticks, fresh spring rolls, chicken curry, pork stew, stir fried Mee Cha noodles, and fluffy Nom Pao buns with pork or chicken teriyaki.

Then there is the building at 2881 North Main, which has been staring down Cherokee Street for over a century. A notable building along North Main Street is poised for a new chapter, as Chamblee Tap and Market has entered into an agreement to purchase 2881 N Main Street, a three-story brick structure that has watched Downtown Kennesaw change for more than a century. A tap-and-market concept in a three-story downtown building is a different signal than a franchise pad on Barrett. It suggests operators believe Main Street can hold weeknight traffic on its own, without the mall.

Meanwhile, on the parkways

The chain story is real, and it is happening a mile or two away. Portillo's Kennesaw officially opened its doors on November 18, 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. followed by doors opening at 10 a.m., marking the brand's first Georgia location. Raising Cane's, one of the nation's fastest-growing restaurant brands, opened a new location in Kennesaw's Town Center area, positioned to serve nearby Kennesaw State University students and local shoppers, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

The Cobb Parkway corridor has more coming. Burger franchise Wayback Burgers has a new location on the way to Kennesaw, opening at 2274 North Cobb Parkway this fall, marking the franchise's 13th location in the state. On the ramen and Chinese side, Okiboru Ramen & Tsukemen is now open in the Town Center Plaza shopping center, specializing in tsukemen, a Japanese dipping ramen style built around thick noodles that arrive separately from the broth, cold or room temperature, firm and chewy enough to hold their own. Asian Wok opened on May 4, 2026, in the former Penang Malaysian Cuisine space, with a menu that includes Chinese staples like fried rice, lo mein, Mongolian beef, and orange chicken as well as specialty items like Beijing roast duck and steamed pork soup dumplings.

Not every corridor story is an opening. Bahama Breeze's Kennesaw location at 755 Ernest W. Barrett Parkway NW remained open through April 5, 2026, and Darden has decided to convert the Kennesaw Bahama Breeze restaurant into another Darden concept over the next 12 to 18 months. A parkway pad that big rarely sits still, so keep an eye on the marquee if you drive past.

What's on this month

August in Downtown Kennesaw is dense. The two things worth marking first are the First Friday concert and the last stretch of the farmers market season.

The August 7 First Friday show features G Clef & The Playlist, performing an energetic mix of Motown, pop, rock, R&B and hip-hop favorites, with strong vocals, tight instrumentation and a versatile setlist that keeps audiences engaged from start to finish. Admission is free, and tables are available for reservation for $60-70, seating six. If you have been to First Friday before, you know the tables go fast in the summer, and standing room on the plaza fills in by 7:30.

The farmers market is worth planning around now, not later. The market runs Thursdays from 3:00 – 7:00 PM, May 7 through August 27, 2026, at Depot Park, located in the parking lot on the Sardis Street side of the park, with additional booths extending into the adjacent trail area. After the 27th, the Thursday routine goes on pause until spring, so the last four Thursdays of the month are the window.

For the amphitheater, the August 22 show is Rumours ATL, a premier Atlanta-based tribute band that has spent over a decade meticulously recreating the sound and stage presence of Fleetwood Mac during their iconic mid-to-late '70s era. Chairs may be placed in the park after 7 am on the day of an event.

Looking into fall

Two dates deserve to go on the September and October calendar right now.

• Kennesaw Grand Prix 5K, Fri, Sept 19. The Kennesaw Grand Prix Series is the premier 5K race series in North Georgia, with a course that is mostly asphalt and is flat and fast.
• Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival, Oct 16–17. The festival takes place in Downtown Kennesaw along Main Street and at the United Bankshares Amphitheater at Depot Park. If you have out-of-town family coming for a fall weekend, this is the one to plan the trip around.

Concerts do not stop in September, either. Sons N Britches, blending Americana, blues, country, folk and rock, plays First Friday on September 4, 2026. Dancing Dream, a NYC-based tribute band founded in 2009 specializing in authentic 1970s ABBA performances, plays the amphitheater September 26.

A short list for the next four Thursdays

If you want a repeatable weeknight in Downtown Kennesaw between now and Labor Day, the routine writes itself:

1. Park once, near Depot Park.
2. Walk the farmers market between 3 and 5.
3. Cross to Cherokee Street for an early dinner at Smash Hit Burgers on the patio.
4. On the first Friday of the month, stay for the concert at Main Street Plaza.
5. On other weeks, drift north on Main to Jiles Plaza and try Joupe Jeht.

That loop did not exist two years ago. The Nest space was empty. Joupe Jeht was a pop-up. First Friday was still finding its audience. What the 2026 openings tell you, if you follow them closely, is that Downtown Kennesaw finally has enough owner-operated food to fill a week, not just a Saturday. The parkway keeps doing what the parkway does. Main Street is doing something new.
